St. Denis was a 3rd-century Christian martyr, beheaded on the highest hill of Montmarte (literally "mount of the martyr") . One version of his tale has it that he picked up his severed head and walked several miles all the while preaching a sermon on repentance. Note the halo extending up from the neck.
